Nutplates offer a simple and effective solution for blind fastener installations. Also known as plate nuts or anchor nuts, they feature a threaded nut with an anchor base.

Even if you can’t access the rear side of an assembly, you can install a threaded fastener using a nutplate. As you drive the threaded fastener into the assembly, it will twist into the anchored nutplate — assuming the fastener and nutplate are properly aligned. Rather than using a standard nutplate, though, you may want to use a self-locking nutplate.

What Are Self-Locking Nutplates?

Self-locking nutplates are characterized by a locking mechanism. Like all nutplates, they feature a threaded nut with an anchor base. Self-locking nutplates also support blind fastener installations. However, only self-locking nutplates have a locking mechanism. As you twist a threaded fastener into the nut, the self-locking nutplate will “lock” it in place.

Common Locking Mechanisms For Self-Locking Nutplates

Self-locking nutplates typically feature one of two locking mechanisms: a nylon insert or a section of deformed threads. Both types of mechanisms are designed to lock a threaded fastener in place, but they work in different ways.

Nylon self-locking nutplates work by leveraging a thin ring of nylon. As you twist the threaded fastener into the nut, the fastener will cut through the nylon ring. This process creates friction that holds the threaded fastener in place.

Deformed self-locking nutplates work by leveraging a section of warped threads. The top section of threads are intentionally deformed during production. As you twist the threaded fastener into the nut, the deformed threads create a clamping force to secure the fastener.

Benefits of Self-Locking Nutplates

Self-locking nutplates offer several benefits, one of which is protection from vibration-induced loosening. Threaded fasteners can loosen when exposed to vibration. It may not happen immediately, but constant vibrations can gradually loosen to threaded fasteners to the point where they no longer create a secure joint. Self-locking nutplates are designed to hold threaded fasteners in place so that vibration-induced loosening is less likely to occur.
